Good reporting in the Chicago Tribune

Chicago Tribune reports on immigration enforcement efforts

Anyone who tracks newspaper reporting on our country’s immigration crisis has read what is basically the same article dozens of times. It invariably begins with a sentence like this: “Honest, hard-working Pedro wonders when he and his terrified wife and children can finally come out of the shadows and enjoy their hard-earned their share of the American Dream without living in fear…” The boiler-plate article then goes on to describe the hardships that our “undocumented” brethren among us must endure, and to call for “equal rights” in the form of amnesties, guest worker programs, and so forth.

The Trib’s article, “Tracking down 1 at a time,” is a breath of fresh air in the stale world of “politically correct” immigration reporting. While it does begin with an alien’s hard-luck story, the person in question is a Polish illegal who had already been convicted of burglary and battery, and was ultimately arrested and deported in a raid by Federal agents. The article goes on to give an even-handed, matter-of-fact report on enforcement activities without painting the lawbreakers as victims. It even quotes an immigration enforcement activist who stated that rounding up criminals wasn’t enough—that authorities should “take the more politically sensitive step of targeting workplaces and employers, many of whom are generous political donors.”

This kind of brutal honesty has been rare in the “mainstream” media. The Trib’s article ends from a quote from an immigration supervisor: “The American public and the U.S. government see people who are out there and shouldn’t be… They want to see some type of action brought against these people. That is our mission.” Well said!

Our recommendation: Write to the Chicago Tribune and thank them for their fair and courageous reporting on a grave national problem.
