Chicago, look at your shame!

City vows to remain “sanctuary” for criminal aliens even if Feds crack down

A recent Chicago Sun-Times article states that “[i]f the great immigration debate now raging in Congress is decided in a way that turns illegal immigrants into criminals, Chicago Police officers and other city employees would not enforce it, the City Council decided…”

Daley’s executive order states, “No agent or agency shall request information about or otherwise investigate or assist in the investigation of citizenship or residency status of any person unless such an inquiry or investigation is required by statute, ordinance, federal regulation or court decision.” In practice, the city is committed to doing everything in its power to circumvent such requirements wherever they exist.

Daley’s order futher directs that city services, benefits and opportunities should not be “conditioned” on “matters related to citizenship or residency status” unless otherwise required by law.

Our commentary: Any lawyers out there that want to challenge this? States and cities have sometimes tried to permit use of marijuana and other drugs, but they can’t “legalize” behavior that’s against Federal law. It is a sad commentary on the state of the Chicago city government that it is so intent on protecting criminal aliens at the expense of American citizens that it’s even willing to buck Federal law in order to accomplish this. If only the Mayor were so deeply committed to the well-being of the legitimate inhabitants of his city!
