Big-money New Yorkers vs. a 73-year-old lady from Kansas City

A recent article in the Wall Street Journal shows how utterly ignorant, and often hateful, wealthy elites can be of average people in the heartland, or “flyover country,” as they like to call it.

The title of the article, “Anti-Immigration Activists Roil the Heartland,” says it all.  To the big-money, open-borders folks at WSJ, the problem isn’t the flood of Third World migrants (and Third World crime, disease, overcrowding, and poverty) into the American heartland–it’s resistance against these things.  Even an elderly lady from Kansas City who wants to help promote better parks can be a target.  As the Journal puts it:

An elderly woman’s appointment to a local parks board doesn’t normally generate controversy. But in Kansas City, Mo., Frances Semler’s new position on the city’s Parks and Recreation board has unexpectedly fanned the flames of the debate over illegal immigration.

The 73-year-old Mrs. Semler is an activist in the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps, a controversial volunteer civilian patrol formed two years ago to secure U.S. borders and crack down on illegal immigrants. While President Bush has denounced the Minutemen as “vigilantes,” and human-rights organizations express concern that a group they consider extremist and bent on taking the law into its own hands is winning over ordinary Americans, the group itself is legal — and growing. And as the stir over Mrs. Semler’s appointment shows, the Minutemen’s influence has spread deep into Middle America, far from the U.S.-Mexico borders where the anti-illegal-immigrant group originated.

Mrs. Semler was duly appointed with little fanfare, but when her “ties” to American resistance against illegal aliens were uncovered, well-funded interest groups scrambled like fighter jets to attack and neutralize her.

[H]er connection to the local Minutemen chapter was made public by the daily Kansas City Star. The city’s National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the Coalition of Hispanic Organizations, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and the Jewish Community Relations Bureau held a news conference on June 14 to condemn the appointment. Later that day, the city council, voting 9 to 3, adopted a resolution calling for Mrs. Semler’s removal from the parks board.

So far, Kansas City Mayor Mark Funkhouser is bravely standing by Mrs. Semler, as are most of the citizens of Kansas City.  But the big-money boys, from the Wall Street Journal on down, are calling for her head.

Our homeland, the Midwest, it seems, is just like the rest of America.

I noticed the NAACP has joined the throng that wants her gone. Someone should alert V-Dare of this fact.

The NAACP, Coalition of Hispanic Organisations, the Southern Leadership Conference, and the Jewish Community Relations Bureau? Who would have figured? Has anyone of you out there ever met a conservative American Jew? Just curious.

Unbelievable? I came here nearly 45 years ago legally, and I have to say I am “ASHAMED” at what is happening. This is a great country, but big business is really taking over, even going after old ladies that are just trying to do what’s right. Anything for a buck?

[…] As we reported in a previous post, powerful interests have been putting tremendous pressure on Kansas City to fire Frances Semler, a 73 year old grandmother, from the Park Board because of her Minuteman sympathies. Of course, it’s not that she has any significant authority that she could use against illegal aliens. Rather, it’s about the open borders lobby (i.e. rich Americans wanting cheap labor) and the Hispanic lobby (i.e. aliens, legal and illegal, wanting the right to colonize the U.S. with impunity) joining forces and “setting an example” that their will must be obeyed–or else.
