Northwest Herald: “Deportation was Deserved”

An recent editorial in the Northwest Herald brings a welcome voice of sanity to the discussion of the case of illegal alien Elvira Arellano, who holed up in a Chicago church to avoid deportation:

Immigration activists are wrong to praise Elvira Arellano, the woman who hid in a Chicago church for a year until being deported Monday. Arellano’s flouting of U.S. law, her arrogance, and her crass use of her own son is nothing to cheer about.

Arellano first snuck into this country in 1997. She was deported. She snuck in again and began working at O’Hare International Airport with a fake Social Security number. Arellano was arrested and convicted of using the fake number in 2002. She was to turn herself in to authorities last August, but instead took refuge in a church.

Far from apologizing for her behavior, Arellano has taunted U.S. officials from the sanctuary of the church. Arellano was deported Monday after she left the church to attend an event in Los Angeles. She left her son behind, which led to a tear-filled scene that can best be described as manipulative. Meanwhile, activists sang her praises.
