Following Chicago’s lead, the Evanston city council is poised to pass a measure that will forbid police and other city officials from inquiring into criminals’ and others’ immigration status, essentially making the city a “sanctuary” for illegals.

Given Evanston’s reputation as an ultra-liberal bastion of “diversity,” this is hardly surprising. Harder to understand is why the American majority doesn’t put an end to this practice, period. After all, cities and towns cannot declare themselves “sanctuaries” of illegal drug use, child pornography, cruelty to animals, or other social ills. Yet illegal immigration, arguably, will do more to destroy our society than all of these things combined as Americans are displaced from their neighborhoods, workplaces, and public institutions by an alien people.
